Scene from 'Cherry'

Thanks to years of tradition, the male coming of age story has pretty much become ‘OMG GOTTA LOSE MY VIRGINITY QUICK’. Reading the synopsis for this film doesn’t lend much hope for anything different – ‘An Ivy League freshman gets an unexpected education when he falls for an older woman and her 14 year-old daughter develops a crush on him.’

If that doesn’t sound like a set up for a HILARIOUS set of events involving a love triangle, some laxatives and a crazy over the top jock character, you clearly missed the last 10 years.

Luckily, even though the title would suggest that this is a sex quest comedy, there is more to it.

Rather than the main character being obsessed with getting his bone on, he has some other problems as well; a controlling mother, a rubbish room mate, and that minor issue of falling in love with a woman twice his age.

The whole mother-daughter-friend love triangle is dealt with effectively, at no point seeming gratuitous, but it does leave the other characters on the wayside, most of them are just there to move the story along. The daughter does seem to fall in love within about 10 minutes, but maybe that’s just how 14 year old girls work these days.

It’s by no means an amazing film, but it is good.
